Flower Power (Christmas) Quilt

I started this quilt in 2018 in Berlin. While I was walking through the city, I found a fabric store called „Frau Tulpe Stoffe.“ Frau Tulpe Stoffe – Frau Tulpe Stoffe I bought some of the fabrics which are featured in this quilt. I liked going to that store. I was visiting my friend, and we would sit in her apartment and sew together. It was like a little sewing circle. We had a lot of fun.

It might seem like it is too much „flower“ for you, but I liked the idea. It emphasizes the power of colors, flowers, and love. Now, many years later, on November 4, 2024, I finished the 20 blocks. The flower petals have different shapes of roses. There are roses from tiny to large. I tried to match the flower colors to the inside square. On the photo are just four represented, but in the finished quilt it will show one other colored square. For example, the large flowers have dark red colored roses, so I chose a dark red square. I chose green for the leaves, just like in nature.

Another name for this quilt pattern is „Prairie Flower.“ I was inspired to make this quilt from the „Prairie Flower Quilt“ from the Missouri Star Quilt Company. When I started this quilt, I was not a beginner, but did not know all the tricks. Because there is a way to keep the point on the flower petals, but I chose to keep going this way so it matches the other blocks which I had already done. I still need the white fabric to finish the quilt. Hopefully I will have enough…

So my Quilt is finally finished!

I bought some more fabric. The green for the boarder and red for the binding. I bought the fabric at the store in Saarbrücken called Nähapartment. It is a lovely little place hidden between a bakery and a store for shirts and vinyl Music. The green fabric was not enough for the backing, and I added some in between to stretch it. Some areas of the binding I sewed by hand, because the sewing machine did not get it all. I like it, but I still need to practice my quilting (top stitching).

The Quilt Bag

The essential bag, which you need to carry your unfinished quilt. This is also one of my first projects I have done. Everyone has one. I made the bag after my first quilt. It was a pattern from the teacher. I got the fabric from the store. I had to buy the wooden sticks for the handle. At the moment, I store all my unfinished projects inside. There are also finished projects such as Christmas stockings. Have you noticed the little dolphin?

My First Quilt

My first experience with quilting was when I saw the movie „How to make an American Quilt“ from 1996. I did not start sewing thought until I was in Germany and sewed my first quilt in 2011 – 2012. I found a store specifically for Quilting in Völklingen, SL, Germany.

I had picked my fabric, but then was told it was not good, because the pattern on the fabric was too big. It would not shine and be seen when the fabric was cut in small pieces. That moment it was so taken from me and I did not want to continue with my chosen fabric, but I did stick to it. Some of the colors did stay and I started my first quilt. Would do, start small. First you cut and sew your piece and much later you add the rest of the fabric to see what will fit later. I went every week and even jumped ahead to the next pattern, which was sometimes too fast. I created a quilt which is called “a sample quilt.” That means that there are different blocks. I decided to add three more patterns, so I ended up with 15 blocks.

Because I created the quilt in Germany, I worked with cm. It is important to stick to one measurement while cutting, otherwise when sewing the pieces won’t fit properly. You might even get confused.

My quilt was lost but then was found… it is a sad story but with a happy ending. A day before my birthday, I was on the bus to the store where they had the classes. I forgot my quilt on the bus. I realized it the moment I got off. Furthermore, I had to run to the train station where I thought the bus would go, but it was not the right one. I cried, and I broke down at the bus stop. The store was nearby, and I went in crying very heavily. The lady in the store helped me track down the bus and I went to the stop where I had got off before and got my quilt back.

This is my quilt! At the end I do like my first Quilt.
